Four Creatives

BICS society of the year 2013

Find Out More Student’s Working Overseas Trust (SWOT) is a charitable society, which was initially established in Ireland in the 1980's, led by 4th year medical and dental students. In it’s current form, SWOT is now exclusively run by 4th year medical students here at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB).

About SWOT

We raise lots of money for third world hospitials.

At the end of our 4th year, we are encouraged to take a 6-week elective abroad in order to gain valuable medical experience before we start our lives as junior doctors. Each year we raise money that helps deliver much needed financial aid to impoverished hospitals in the third world, facilitating the acquisition of essential medical supplies and the promotion of health care education.

Those of us who take our placement in these third world countries then deliver all money raised by the society to where it is needed most. By doing this we erase the middleman, saving on shipping and governmental costs, ensuring that 100% of the money we raise is going directly to where it will make a difference. Last year we managed to raise £55,000.

The SWOT Fashion Show

The biggest event of the year!

The SWOT Fashion Show is one of the major events in the university’s social calendar with last year’s 1200 tickets all selling out. It has won QUB event of the year for many years running as well as the Board of Irish Colleges Event of the Year, a title we are very proud of. The event consists of about 15 choreographed dances, showing off the best fashion various Belfast shops have to offer! All models are members of our year group who juggle dance practice with a busy timetable of hospital placement. The show raises between £25-30,000 annually. This years show is on the 17th February. Watch this space for details of when tickets go on sale this year, we are hoping to make it bigger and better than ever this year!

BP Clinic

SWOT is a charity which was initially established over 35 years ago and is run by 4th year medical students. Since its establishment it is estimated that over £1 million has been raised for Third World hospitals where 4th year students spend their summer elective; the money goes directly to the hospital accounts or to buy medical equipment. We as students are humbled to see at first-hand how the money is used and the vital work it allows to be done.

One of our fundraising campaigns is the use of blood pressure clinics. These are run by medical students in public places such as shopping centers and sporting events around the province. Last year SWOT ran a successful clinic in Pairc Esler in association with Down GAA. This year we have multiple venues set up to host a blood pressure clinic, providing a valuable health promotion and screening service within the local community while raising valuable funds for developing health systems.

This song was entirely written and performed by 4th year medical students. We decided that we wanted to try something different this year, to really try and spread the message of the work we do. We feel the song tells our story pretty well, and it has been a fantastic/very hectic new project for the society. Every penny raised from downloading the song will go directly to 3rd World Hospitals. We couldn't have achieved this without the help of our sponsors listed at the end of the video.

With thanks to the band...
